The policy, in two halves
This site shows Anthropic's US list prices for Claude plans. It never pre-fills one into a calculator. Both halves are deliberate, and they are easier to trust once the reasoning is stated plainly rather than left for readers to guess.
Why list prices are shown
For most of its life this site published no plan price at all. Part of the original argument was that no single source was worth citing; that stopped being true once Anthropic's plans page and help center published prices clearly, and a reader comparing Pro, Max and Team seats needs to see them. So they now appear on Claude plans explained, read from Anthropic's own pages, dated, and held to the same freshness rule as every model price: the site refuses to build once the figures are past their verification limit, which forces a re-read rather than letting a price go quietly stale. They carry the qualifiers Anthropic attaches — US dollars, excluding tax, varying by region, and for Max, web subscriptions only.
Why the calculator still starts empty
Your real cost turns on your currency, your tax treatment, your billing period and any discount you hold — the same plan costs a different amount billed monthly than billed annually. A figure pre-filled into a cost calculator is indistinguishable from the right one until someone acts on it, and for a meaningful share of readers it would be wrong from the moment the page loaded. Earlier versions of the calculator did open with a sample figure, and it happened to match a real plan's list price, which read as a recommendation. So the subscription vs API cost calculator now opens with an empty price box, and offers the list prices as buttons you choose to press.
What a list price leaves out
A list price is not your bill: tax is added on top, regional pricing may differ, and plan terms change without a changelog — session usage limits on paid plans were raised as recently as the Opus 5.5 launch. And a plan's price says nothing on its own about whether it beats the API for your usage; only your usage shape can answer that.
